India and Canada have a longstanding bilateral relationship based on shared democratic values, the multi-cultural nature of the two societies and strong people-to-people contacts. Deepening trade ties and economic relations with India has become a key priority for Canada and active negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement are occurring.
The economy of India, the 9th largest in the world, with a population of over 1.2 billion, is flourishing. The annual bilateral trade between India and Canada is approximately five billion dollars and the aim is to increase it to 15 billion dollars by 2015. With trade representing some 60 percent of Canada's economy, strengthening and increasing trade and investment with India is vital to our economic growth.
